Heinrich August Jäschke (1817–1883)

Perhaps Heinrich August Jäschke (1817–1883) would have seen himself primarily as a German missionary (of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine, the Moravian Church or Moravian Brethren, stationed in Kyelang, Lahaul District and Spiti in North India) and as a Bible translator rather than a Tibetologist. His philological training, skills, and contribution in enhancing the knowledge of Tibetan language, however, make him one of the most reliable Tibetologists. From the perspective of Tibetology, his greatest contribution would be his monumental Tibetan-German dictionary published in 1871 (revised 1876), which he expanded and translated into English in 1881(reprinted in 1949).
