Vasily Pavlovich Vasilyev or Wassiljew (1818–1900)

Although Vasily Pavlovich Vasilyev or Wassiljew (1818–1900) is known as a Russian Sinologist and Buddhologist, one can also consider him a Tibetologist inasmuch as he not only learnt Tibetan language well but also used Tibetan sources and literature for his study of Buddhism. Wassiljew’s magnum opus is a three-volume history of Buddhism (1857, 1860, 1865). The first volume was translated into German and French. The value of the German translation (W. Wassiljew, Der Buddhismus: Seine Dogmen, Geschichte und Literatur. St. Petersburg: 1860) still endures.
