Brian Houghton Hodgson (1800/01–1894) is considered a pioneer naturalist and ethnologist working in India and Nepal where he was a British civil servant. The origins of Himalayan Studies are connected with his activities (Waterhouse 2005). Among the Buddhologists, he is known for sending (Buddhist) Sanskrit manuscripts to Europe thereby giving an impetus to the study of Buddhism. What is perhaps less known is that he had learnt Tibetan language, sent four times more Tibetan manuscripts than he did Sanskrit manuscripts (Hunter 1896: 271), and published some works dealing with Tibetan culture.
